2009 Recipient:
Matt Van Slooten
NAIOP Minnesota is proud to award the 2009 President’s Award to Matt Van Slooten. Matt’s long-time and active leadership within the commercial real estate industry has benefited many within his company, NAIOP, and the larger community.
Matt joined Carlson Real Estate Company in 1989 and during his career there has served in accounting, leasing, property management, investment, and development roles, prior to being named president in 2001. Carlson Real Estate Company's portfolio represents over 6 million square-feet of space and $500 million of real estate investment throughout the United States.
Matt has been actively involved with NAIOP since 1990. He served as the NAIOP Minnesota president in 2002 and has continued to play an active role on many fronts. Matt can be counted on for enthusiastic participation at NAIOP functions including board and planning meetings, programs and other events. As a volunteer mentor to NAIOP Minnesota’s Developing Leaders, Matt has helped to guide the next generation of industry leaders. Matt's endorsement of this program has led to numerous and significant volunteer contributions including additional committee volunteers and leaders. In addition to his donated time, Matt and his company are substantial financial contributors to NAIOP and supporters of NAIOP Minnesota’s Penny Per Square Foot Fund to control property taxes. Carlson has hosted many NAIOP functions, leadership meetings and meetings with legislative leaders.
As an ardent supporter of community enhancement, Matt and Carlson Real Estate Company have shown strong involvement with NAIOP Minnesota’s charitable partners. Through Carlson’s affiliate company Radisson Hotels came a significant contribution of surplus mattresses to Hope for the City when the company switched over to Sleep Number beds. In 2009 Matt was also a member of the Charity Selection Task Force, helping to choose NAIOP Minnesota’s charitable partner debuting in 2010.
Matt’s leadership and thoughtful insights have helped direct and focus both our association and industry for the present and many years to come. The President’s Award criteria fit Matt perfectly and NAIOP Minnesota is honored to bestow Matt Van Slooten with this recognition.
