Transparency Proposal Talking Points for NAIOP members
Transparency Proposal FAQ
Transparency Proposal Press Release, Initiative to Spur Greater Transparency in Local Government Spending Launched by NAIOP Minnesota
Ultimately local government spending drives property tax levies and, in turn, property taxpayers’ bills. This is the most influential piece of the property tax system. It is also the most important and—in many ways—the most challenging element for taxpayers to understand.

2010 Property Tax Education Flyer
Increasing fixed costs, such as property taxes, on any Minnesota employer in this tough economy will only make it even more difficult for them to retain existing employees and keep them working, let alone create new jobs or bring back workers who have already been laid off.

An urgent message to Minnesota's policymakers...

2009 Property Tax Education Flyer
It is likely that a proposal to increase business property taxes over and above the already projected statewide increase of 8% for 2009 will be on the legislative agenda again this year. In preparation for that debate, it is important that business property taxpayers fully understand Minnesota's dual system of taxing commercial and industrial property. NAIOP in partnership with the Coalition of Minnesota Businesses, the Minnesota Business Partnership and the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce has developed a special educational flyer explaining that system.

Feedback Forum
Chaired by Peter Kordonowy, Steiner Development
Real World Experiences from the Leading Edge of Economic Growth
In addition to being the leading provider of housing for Minnesota's businesses, NAIOP members – in their positions as managers, brokers, developers and investors in commercial and industrial facilities – play an important role in capturing the significant economic opportunities created when businesses expand or relocate to our state. However, our members' efforts to compete successfully against other states for the new jobs and investments that these companies bring with them are frequently frustrated by conditions beyond our control. The costs of doing business, governmental attitudes, lack of economic incentives, and other business climate issues can cancel out all of the advantages the "Minnesota option" has to offer, such as a highly skilled and productive workforce, superior education, and cultural and lifestyle benefits.
As a mechanism for creating a bank of these "real world" experiences gathered from the workday lives of our 850 individual members, and the thousands of companies that are tenants in our members' owned or managed facilities, the Public Policy Committee is proposing to establish a "Feedback Forum" – an organized method for collecting, verifying and disseminating reliable anecdotal information on this growing problem, that has the potential to do significant harm to the our industry, and other industries in the State of Minnesota.
Our objectives for the Feedback Forum are:
- To support the work of the Public Policy Committee in its ongoing efforts to educate Minnesotas civic leaders and legislators about the actual or potential impact of their tax and fiscal decisions and initiatives on individual businesses, their employees and the communities in which they operate and compete.
- To supplement objective and highly credible information that we currently provide to legislators, the press, and the taxpaying public – through our Comparative Tax Study, TaxWatch, and other studies and reports about the ability of our industry, and our state, to compete effectively for new business investment and jobs – with new, reliable data drawn from the actual experiences of our members and our business tenants.
Peter Kordonowy is in the process of recruiting members for the Forum. The committee list and additional details will be available soon. |
